The finest furniture makers in Norfolk

The Norfolk Furniture Makers Association

The Norfolk Furniture Makers Association (NFMA) was founded in 1972 in order to promote the pursuit of excellence in furniture making within Norfolk and is now nationally recognised as one of the foremost organisations of its kind in the country.

We are an organisation of individual craftsmen who offer a range of bespoke furniture making and design services to both private and commercial clients.

All members of the association have to undergo a rigorous vetting procedure to ensure that the highest standards of craftsmanship are maintained.

Why set up the NFMA?

The 1970’s saw a resurgence of interest in traditional craftsmanship as a reaction to the mass production of the 1950’s and 1960’s. This interest has developed over the years to include an increased awareness of the importance of design. There is a now a greater desire to express one’s individuality in an increasingly regulated and homogenised world. The issue of sustainability is also becoming ever more important and craftsman-made furniture which is designed to last for generations is now even more highly valued.

Personal service

The commissioning process allows the individual craftsman to take time to understand the specific requirements of the client. Some clients have a very clear idea of what they want to achieve. Others are happy to allow the designer free rein to offer a variety of solutions to suit a particular situation.

All of the members of the Association take great care in the sourcing of materials and wherever possible use local suppliers. All furniture is made wholly in Norfolk and does not have to be transported from far away continents thus reducing ‘wood miles’.

Amongst the members of the Norfolk Furniture Makers Association are some of the finest furniture designers and makers in the U. K. and members have been awarded eleven Craft Guild Mark Certificates from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers in recognition of the excellence of their work.

Membership of the Association is restricted to professional furniture makers based in Norfolk. New applicants have to be assessed by the existing members in order to ensure that the high standards of craftsmanship for which the organisation is known are maintained.
